Alex Palmer's Natural History Notes and Thoughts

Thoughts and reflections on various social and environmental issues, as well as naturalist observations from the great outdoors.

a wild evening walk

This evening I went for a walk near my parent’s new waterside town home in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. The mild coastal climate and the network of tidal basins creates a serene atmosphere. It also makes for some nice bird watching. Out on the water I saw Hooded Mergansers, Scaups, Buffleheads, Mallards, Wood Ducks, Ring-billed Gulls, and Canada Geese. On the shores and marshy edges there were a few cardinals and robins heading in for the night, as a Great Egret hunted for fish in a grassy backwater area. These graceful animals remind us that we are not the only ones that enjoy this quite coastal region.
